In talking with labs involved in testing for PFOA in products a few important points have arisen:
  1. Not many laboratories in the US and very few Asian Labs are effectively testing for the PFOA family. This involves testing for very small amounts of chemical in the parts per trillion ranges (PPT) as opposed to part per million (PPM) range.

  2. It is very likely that product coming from Asia, even if it claims to have been tested for PFOA, has not been properly tested. Confirmation by a qualified US lab should be done.

  3. Appropriate testing for PFOA by a qualified US lab should take about two weeks and cost in the $500-$600 per sample. Of course large orders may be less per sample however time required is tough to shorten.

  4. There is increasing evidence that the US groundwater supply has been substantially contaminated by the PFOA family in a wide variety of settings. This is not just an industrial center issue. Rural America is seeing these issues as firefighting foam; waterproofing and stain resistant coatings are often present in rural areas and landfills. If you are using groundwater or municipal water to clean or make / process products, you should test that water for the PFOA family. World-wide the problem is probably worse.

  5. While it is not clear whether these chemicals will become the next phthalate issue in manufacturing, many states beside California are now interested in PFOA and controlling and warning of its presence in products.
